Get back AU$80 from Apple if you paid for a new iPhone battery in 2017

Apple is offering a AU$ 80 credit to customers who paid for an out-of-warranty battery replacement for iPhone 6 or later devices between January 1, 2017 and December 28, 2017. Eligible battery replacements were completed at an Apple authorized service location  Apple Store, Apple Repair Center, or an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

The AU$ 80 credit will be provided as an electronic funds transfer or a credit on the credit card used to pay for the battery replacement service.

Eligible customers will be contacted by Apple via email between May 23, 2018 and July 27, 2018 with instructions on how to obtain the credit.

If you have not received an email from Apple by August 1, 2018, but believe you are eligible for a credit based on the terms above, you can  contact Apple by December 31, 2018. Note that proof of service at an Apple authorized service location may be required.

The iPhone Battery Replacement program

On December 28, 2017, Apple announced a price reduction on the out-of-warranty battery replacement price for iPhone 6 or later devices, effective through the end of 2018. It brought the price for repair down from $79 to $29, but the company didn’t provide much help to customers who had already paid for a replacement. Thus Apple is now offering a credit for some replacements made in 2017.

The iPhone battery slowdown saga began when GeekBench discovered some older iPhones were running slower than expected. Diving into the numbers, the researchers found evidence the iPhone 6, 6S, and 7 would run at throttled speeds in some conditions.

In the wake of the controversy, Apple first issued an apology and then revamped its battery replacement program that brought the cost down for users affected by the issue. It also launched a new Battery Health panel in Settings as part of iOS 11.3, which allows customers to see if their battery is affected and control whether or not the phone will slow down in response to it.

Points to remember:

In order to receive the credit, you had to have your iPhone repair done by an authorized Apple service location.

As said above if you don’t hear from Apple by August 1, but believe you’re eligible for a credit, you have until December 31, 2018 to contact the company via the support page, though you’ll need to provide proof the repair was done by an authorized service location.

Apple appears to be extending their apology now by offering this $50 (USD) and $80 (AUD) credit to customers who paid the full $79 for a battery replacement in 2017. However, after December 31, 2018 both battery programs will expire.

Also note that In-warranty iPhone battery replacements are not eligible for this credit.

What does the Apple Battery Replacement program says:

If your iPhone is covered by warranty, or consumer law, iPhone will replace your battery at no charge. Check if your iPhone is still under warranty by entering your iPhone serial number.

If your iPhone has any damage that impairs the replacement of the battery, such as a cracked screen, that issue will need to be resolved prior to the battery replacement. In some cases, there may be a cost associated with the repair.

As your repair options you can bring in for repair by make an appointment at one of the Apple authorized service locations. Apple will try to fix your iPhone during your visit. In more complex cases, they might need to send it to an Apple Repair Center. If they do, your iPhone will be ready for pickup in up to 6 business days. Or you can Start a service request

Some iPhone power issues are caused by factors other than the battery. If you can’t turn on your iPhone, follow these steps to see if the issue resolves.

The warranty covers a defective battery, but it doesn’t cover wear from normal use. If your iPhone needs battery replacement and it’s not covered, there will be a service fee.

Apple will  test your iPhone to see if it has a battery issue or a different power issue. Your repair fees depend on the diagnosis and if the issue is covered under warranty or consumer law. If your iPhone has a non-battery power issue, they will give you the repair price after they determine the cause. To identify your issue and set up service, start a service request.

Through December 31, 2018, the out-of-warranty battery service fee has been reduced for all eligible iPhone 6 or later models. Battery service at the reduced fee may be limited to one repair per iPhone.
